Kostyuk Trounces Liu
World no. 40 Marta Kostyuk won her first clay court match of the year as she knocked out America’s Claire Liu in straight sets to begin her Rome Open campaign in the second round on Friday.
The Ukrainian got off to a flying start as she bagelled Liu in the opening set in just 31 minutes. But Liu hit back with an early break in the second set, which helped her build a 0-3 lead. Kostyuk, however, came back in the set by winning five games in a row, before completing a 6-0, 6-4 victory in an hour and 31 minutes.
The 20-year-old Kostyuk saved 6 of 7 break points and converted 5 of 8 to register her first win in Rome after making back-to-back first round exits in 2021 and 2022.
Kostyuk, who lost in her opening round match in Madrid, was playing in just her second match on clay this year. She was in excellent form on hard courts in the first quarter, which saw her capture her maiden WTA title in Austin by beating Varvara Gracheva in the final. She was also a quarterfinalist in Adelaide and Hua Hin and therefore she has an overall record of 18-10 this year.
She had won just one main draw match on clay in four tournaments last year. Can she win more than one this year?

Badosa Upsets Jabeur
Paula Badosa stunned last year’s finalist Ons Jabeur in straight sets to move into the third round of the Rome Open.
Ranked no. 35th in the world, the Spaniard needed an hour and 12 minutes to dispatch the fourth seed 6-1, 6-4.
Badosa came out all guns blazing to build a 5-0 lead in the first set. Jabeur did manage to win a game, but the Spaniard served out the set in the next game.
The second set was a much more competitive one with both players breaking each other twice each over the first eight games, but Badosa got a third break in the set to improve to 9-3 on clay courts this year.
Badosa was a quarterfinalist in Charleston and Stuttgart and made it to the round of 16 in Madrid. She had begun her Rome campaign with a come-from-behind win over Anna-Lena Friedsam in the first round.
Badosa is 15-7 overall this year and had made it to the semifinals in Adelaide-2. She has an excellent record on clay courts and had won one of her three WTA titles on the surface.
Can she make it to the last 16 in Rome?
