Rune Eases Past Fils

Arthur Fils was 4/1 odds to surprise Rune but there was just one-way traffic for most parts of this second round encounter.

In a match lasting an hour and 24 minutes, Rune overcame Fils 6-3, 6-3 to march into the third round where he will face a former clay court Masters 1000 champion. More on that in the section below.

Rune was quick off the blocks, breaking Fils in the very first game of the opening set and then adding a second one to his name in the fifth. After missing out two set-points in the seventh game and then getting broken in the eighth, Rune finished it off with a third break of the set.

The second set was a lot straightforward for the Danish number one as he broke his opponent in the fourth game, saved a break-point in the fifth before serving it out to love.

This follows a title win at the Munich Open, a runner-up trophy in Monte-Carlo but a third round exit in Madrid. Rune will start off a favourite to go past the third round hurdle this time around.

Fognini Takes Down Kecmanovic

It took him nearly two hours alright but Fognini made it past Miomir Kecmanovic in his second round match after having gotten rid of Andy Murray in the opener.

Fognini did miss out on three match-points in the second set tie-breaker after having racked up a 6-3 advantage in the tie-breaker but he didn’t let that affect him too. He converted the fourth match-point he got to win 6-3, 7-6 (6) to make it to the third.

Where Fognini seemed to score over Kecmanovic was his first serve percentages, with the Italian winning 88% of those as compared to 64% for his opponent. That also ensured Fognini did not face a single break-point in the entire match while he himself earned eight of them, of which he won six.

The question now is this new and improved Fognini can take the attack to the opposition of the quality of Rune and recapture some of the lost glory. Glory that had seen him win a Monte-Carlo Masters title at the expense of Rafael Nadal.
