Novak Djokovic v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

This has been a rather one-sided rivalry with 11 previous meetings have resulted in 10 wins for Djokovic. Dimitrov’s only victory did come on clay but that was 10 years ago in Madrid.

Djokovic Sluggish in Opening Win

Well, Djokovic was coming off an injury and there were bound to be a few nerves and slip-ups to begin with. That’s how his second round match against Tomas Etcheverry started for sure but as the encounter progressed, the world number one gained confidence and pulled off a straight-set win.

Djokovic was on court for an hour and 51 minutes for his 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over his 61st-ranked opponent, feeling much better as the match went on.

In fact, Djokovic was broken in the very first game of the match but the good news for him was that he did not face a single break-point from that point onward. He broke back in the sixth game, missed a couple of set-points in the 10th but then edged past Etcheverry in the tie-breaker that followed.

A break of serve in the first game of the second set and then again in the seventh sealed the deal for the Serb.

He will enter round three feeling a lot better about his own self and his elbow.

Dimitrov Too Good for Wawrinka

A peak-level Stan Wawrinka might not have been an easy opponent to face for any player in the world but that’s not how things are for the Swiss-man at the moment. And Dimitrov took full advantage of that to grab a second round win in Rome.

Dimitrov needed an hour and 38 minutes to register a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory in a match in which he was never behind the eight-ball.

Armed with a break of serve in the very first game of both, the first and the second set, Dimitrov looked to be in a hurry to finish things off. Wawrinka did come back and broke back in the sixth game of the second set only to flounder in the following tie-breaker.

This makes it the fifth successive tournament in which Dimitrov has won his opener. In each of his previous four competitions, Dimitrov has lost in the very next round, and now facing up to Djokovic, it would need a lot out of the Bulgarian to turn that stat around.

Djokovic v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

Djokovic might not have felt the most comfortable with his elbow but he did what he does best – win matches despite being not at his 100%. And even at 70% capacity he wouldn’t have too many too many issues getting past Dimitrov.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
