Cerundolo Scrapes Past Yibing

It took Cerundolo some time and a lot of effort but in the end, he managed to make it past Wu Yibing and seal his third round berth.

Known for his performances on clay, Cerundolo’s form has taken a bit of a hit in recent times but he had still started off a 7/20 favourite in this second round encounter. When he lost the first set, however, it looked like nobody had given Yibing that memo.

Cerundolo came back strongly though, breaking Yibing in the very first game of the second set and then going 4-1 up with a second break of serve.

Yibing did show he is capable of a lot more than being a one-off wonder having earlier won the Dallas Open title when he grabbed a 2-0 lead in the decider but that’s where his resistance end.

The Argentine broke three more times in the set to clinch the match and will now hope to brush his next opponent aside to make the fourth round like he had at the Miami Masters.

Barrere Shocks Khachanov

It took Barrere two hours and 37 minutes but he wouldn’t be complaining after knocking the world number 11 Karen Khachanov out of the competition.

Barrere won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4) despite both players losing their service four times apiece in the contest. And that was not the only stat which said how closely they were matches as Khachanov won 39 first serve points to Barrere’s 38 while the numbers for second serves wer 28 and 26 respectively.

This is also an indicator how well Barrere played on the crucial points, including in the final set tie-breaker where he went 4-2 ahead and then had three match-points at 6-3. He failed to convert the first one before clinching it off the second.

The Frenchman had earlier sent Brandon Nakashima packing but this win over Khachanov is clearly the biggest of his career.

Can he now take advantage of Cerundolo’s dodgy form?

Cerundolo v Barrere Prediction and Tip

While Cerundolo is 3/10 to win this, we think Barrere could surprise a few with his game. Expect him to win a set at the very least.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Barrere to win a set – Yes: 5/6
