Kasatkina Makes Short Work of Italian Wildcard

Kasatkina reached the semi-finals in Rome last year, one of her best results in a WTA 1000 event, and she showed she is in the mood to go far in this tournament again, with a dominant display in her second round match with the Italian wildcard. Laura Pigato, having received a first round bye.

Playing against a teenager ranked 483 in the world, Kasatkina came roaring out of the blocks and won the first five games, until a temporary lapse in concentration saw her drop her serve for the first time.

But normal service was soon resumed, as she broke Pigato again to claim the first set.

The Italian made more of a fight of it in the second set, as the pair swapped breaks twice, before Kasatkina moved a break ahead.

A marathon seventh game in which Pigato had six break points but failed to take any of them ultimately proved to be pivotal, as Kasatkina then broke her again to wrap up the match after just an hour and eleven minutes on court.

Grabher Battles Past Swiss Seed

Grabher had also faced an Italian wildcard in her first round match, but made considerably harder work of beating Nuria Brancaccio in three sets.

She began as underdog in her next match with the number 25 seed, Jil Teichmann of Switzerland, but began well, securing a break in the opening game of the match. The Swiss player, though, recovered it, and it took a tie-break before the Austrian could finally regain the initiative by taking the first set.

The second set became increasingly scrappy, as the unforced errors from both players mounted up, and holding serve became an achievement in itself.

In the end it was Grabher who cracked under the pressure, giving Teichmann the chance to serve for the set, which she managed at the second time of asking.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the third set, and the match remained in the balance, until Teichmann dropped her serve once more, giving the Austrian the chance to serve out.

Even then it needed three match and two break points saved until she finally got the job done.

Kasatkina v Grabher Prediction and Tip

Based on their respective second round performances, and also by the fact that Kasatkina has a good record in Rome, it is difficult to make much of a case for Grabher wining this match. She will be hoping to at least make a fight of it, however.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kasatkina to win: 2/13
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 5/6
