Marco Cecchinato v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head
They have met four times previously (once on the tour and thrice in lower level tournaments) and Hanfmann leads the rivalry 3-1. He won their only tour level meeting in Cagliari in 2021. All their meetings have been on clay.

Marco Cecchinato upset the 21st seed Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets on Sunday to progress to the third round of the Rome Masters for the first time in his career.
The Italian had never gone past the second round in his previous five appearances in the tournament. But he accomplished that in 2023 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bautista Agut in the round of 64.
Cecchinato struck 30 winners to just nine from the Spaniard. He also broke Bautista Agut twice in both the sets but didn’t allow the world no. 25 to break his serve as he saved all seven of the break points that he faced in the match.
Cecchinato had also not dropped a set in the first round, where he beat Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 7-5.
A semifinalist in Estoril this year, the world no. 83 Cecchinato is 11-9 across levels this year. Can he keep his winning run going in Rome?

Hanfmann Knocks Out Ninth Seed Fritz
World no. 101 Yannick Hanfmann has looked in great touch so far on his Rome debut and on Sunday he outplayed ninth seed Taylor Fritz in straight sets to move into the third round.
This is just the second time the German has reached the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament. The first was in the previous tournament in Madrid.
In that tournament too he had made it to the main draw through the qualifiers. Hanfmann has been in great form on clay this year and a 21-8 record across levels on the surface is a testament to that. He was a semifinalist in Houston and a quarterfinalist in Santiago in two of his best finishes at the tour level this year.
In Rome, he qualified for the main draw with straight set wins over Julian Ocleppo and Hugo Grenier. He then ousted Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 6-4 in the first round before registering his biggest win of the tournament against the world no. 9.
Yet again Hanfmann did not drop a set as he thrashed Fritz 6-1, 6-4. Hanfmann converted all five of the break points that he held and saved 1 of 2 as he sailed into the next round.
Cecchinato v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip
Cecchinato is the higher-ranked player, but Hanfmann has been the better player this year. He has particularly been dangerous on clay and is continuing to blossom on the surface. Expect the German to add another win on Monday.
