Canada’s Bianca Andreescu breezed past Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to make it to the semi-finals of the 2019 WTA Indian Wells Open on Wednesday.

Andreescu, a wild-card entrant into the main draw of the competition, completed a shocking straight set win over the former world number one, clinching it 6-0, 6-1 to make it her first ever Premier Mandatory last-four stage.

Muguruza won just 41% of her first serve points as compared to 83% for her opponent and that’s where the difference in the two players decided the encounter. Andreescu won three breaks of serve in the first and two more in the second set with her 20th seeded opponent managing to win just a game in the end.

Earlier, the world number 60 from Canada, had gotten the better of Dominika Cibulkova and Qiang Wang among the other seeded players in the draw to make it this far.

Interestingly, Andreescu’s steep rise to the top, shouldn’t come as a big surprise, having made it to the final of the Auckland Open earlier this year. In doing so she defeated the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams and Hsieh Su-wei before going down to Julia Goerges in the final.

She will now take on the winner of the match between Elina Svitolina, the sixth seed, and Marketa Vondousova, who will contest in their quarter-final later in the day.
