That Fabio Fognini made it to the third was a big enough surprise given the Italian player’s form in recent times. Against Rune though, he met his match, with the Danish number one winning in straight sets.
Rune needed all of an hour and 17 minutes before sending Fognini home, winning 6-4, 6-2.
While Fognini break Rune once, and that came in the first set, the world number seven was already 5-2 up by then. He responded by winning the next service game and hence, the set, before grabbing a 4-0 lead in the second set.
He finished things off soon after.
Rune had earlier overcome Arthur Fils in the second round the same way and this victory over Fognini gives him a 10-2 record on clay this season. He will be a favourite to notch up an 11th victory here.

Qualifier Popyrin Continues to Impress
After getting through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw of this competition, Popyrin has continued to impress. He first sent fellow Aussie Christopher O’Connell on his way in the first round before shocking Felix Auger-Aliassime in a hard-fought second.
And then in a match-up between two qualifiers, Popyrin grabbed a straight-set win over Roman Safiullin to seal his fourth round spot.
What makes this performance even more impressive is that Popyrin had never won a main draw match in Rome and before this, hadn’t won three matches in a row in the main draw of an ATP event this season.
In a match lasting nearly two hours, Popyrin pulled off late breaks of serves in both the sets to win 7-5, 7-5.
Can he now make life difficult for Rune?
