Veronika Kudermetova v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the Tokyo Open last year and Zheng won that in three sets to make the final.

Bouzkova No Match for Kudermetova

Kudermetova took one step closer towards making it two successive semifinals in WTA 1000 events as she routed Marie Bouzkova in the fourth round of this competition in Rome.

After having made it to the last four stage of the Madrid Open, Kudermetova had already sent Nuria Parrizas Diaz packing in the second round here before staving off fellow Russian Anastasia Potapova’s challenge in three sets.

It became a lot easier against Bouzkova though.

In a match that lasted a mere hour and 20 minutes, Bouzkova carved out a 6-2, 6-2 win to seal her spot in the last eight.

With a first serve percentage reading a whopping 85% and having faced just one break-point in the entire contest, Kudermetova was largely untroubled in the contest. She earned 11 break-points in the process and got the better of her opponent on four occasions.

Can she now pull off another win and in turn, another semifinal appearance?

While Qinwen is ranked 21st in the world to Xiyu Wang’s 75th, one always got a sense this could turn out to be a fighting encounter on clay. And that’s exactly what happened with Qinwen needing three sets to come through.

Qinwen was on court for over two and a half hours for her 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory as she wore her opponent down by the end of the encounter.

Having sent Alize Cornet and Anna Bondar out in the previous two rounds, Zheng looked to be on the top of things when all it took was one break-point to win the first set. She grabbed an early break in the second set but Wang came back to not just level things out but also add a second break of serve.

With the scores level, Zheng then found a higher gear to her game as she broke twice in a row to start the set and wrapped it up soon after that.

She will need to do a lot better, one feels, if she needs to come through against Kudermetova.

Kudermetova v Zheng Prediction and Tip

We will have to back Kudermetova here with one caveat – she has been playing for four successive weeks now, having reached the semifinal of the Madrid event too. If this goes into a third, then all bets might be off.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Kudermetova to win: 10/11
