Ruud Makes Quick Work of Djere

World no. 4 Casper Ruud made quick work of Laslo Djere in the round of 16 on Tuesday to sail into the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters for the third time in his career.

The Norwegian was broken by Djere in the first game of the match but he was in command for the rest of the match. He won six games in a row to take the opening set and then broke the Serbian twice in the second set for a 6-1, 6-3 victory in an hour and 10 minutes.

This was Ruud’s second straight sets win of the tournament following his second round victory over Arthur Rinderknech. He was however taken to three sets by Alexander Bublik in the third round, before he knocked out the world no. 49, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0).

Ruud, who was a semifinalist at the Italian Open in 2020 and 2022, will be playing in just his second quarterfinal of 2023. It has not been a great year so far by his standards, but he still managed to capture his 10th ATP title in Estoril. He is 14-9 overall and 9-3 on clay this year. Can he reach a third consecutive semifinal in Rome?

Cerundolo Rallies Past Sinner

World no. 31 Francisco Cerundolo scored a top 10 win on Tuesday as the Argentine bounced back after losing the first set to defeat world no. 8 Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

In the two-hour-and-27-minute contest, Cerundolo saved 3 of 8 break points and converted half of the 14 breaking opportunities that he held to oust the Italian 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2.

This was not the first time that Cerundolo had to rebound from a set down to win a match in Rome this year. He did that in both his previous rounds as well.

The 24th seed Cerundolo beat Wu Yibing 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round and ousted Grégoire Barrère 6-7 (0-7), 6-2, 6-2 in the third round.

Cerundolo is 17-12 overall and 10-7 on clay this year. It will be the fifth time he will be competing in the last eight stage this year, however he is yet to play a semifinal in 2023.

Ruud v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

It’s not even been a month since Cerundolo’s win over Ruud in the round of 16 of the Barcelona Open and therefore he will go in with some confidence behind him. However, Ruud seems to be back in his elements and therefore, he will be the favourite to get his Barcelona revenge and advance to a third semifinal in Rome.

Tips:
