Medvedev Defeats Zverev Again

Alexander Zverev had already shown signs of returning back to his best but for the second time on clay this season, Medvedev got the better of him.

The last time these two faced off at the Monte-Carlo Masters, they had gotten involved in a war of words after the match. This time around there were no such shenanigans as Medvedev held his ground yet again to overcome his opponent.

In doing so, Medvedev made the quarterfinals of two ATP 1000 events in the same season for the first time in his career.

Medvedev was a 6-2, 7-6 (3) winner after having lost three successive matches at the Rome Masters before the start of this season’s competition. He could have made life a lot easier for himself had he taken advantage of being up a break in the second set but Zverev broke back and took it into a tie-breaker.

He will now face another German for a place in the semifinal and this one is ranked outside the top 100. Does that matter though?

Hanfmann Continues Fairy Tale Run

Medvedev has already admitted he will need to play to the best of his capabilities if he needs to overcome Hanfmann. Those might not be mere words either given what Medvedev has already seen of Hanfmann.

Hanfmann has had to play qualifiers in all but one of the nine clay court competitions he has participated in this season. And despite that, he has done well enough to make it to the quarterfinals in three of them.

In Madrid, he had entered the third round, while being a semifinalist in Houston last month.

But his biggest career achievement came in the fourth round here when he sent Andrey Rublev packing from the tournament, beating the world number six in three sets. Rublev was his highest-ranked scalp after Hanfmann had earlier tossed the world number nine Taylor Fritz out too.

Can he do the same to Medvedev?

Medvedev v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Medvedev might be a 2/7 favourite here but there are a couple of concerns – can he raise his motivational levels against a player ranked outside the top 100 and if he can sustain his own playing level on clay. Hanfmann might sneak in a set here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Medvedev to win: 2/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 10/11
