Veronika Kudermetova v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one. In 2021, it was Kudermetova who won in Linz while earlier this year when they met again in Dubai, Kalinina came through in three sets.

They have never faced off on clay before this.

Kudermetova Usurps Qinwen

A semifinalist at the Madrid Open two weeks ago, Kudermetova continued with that winning run as she overcame Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinal here in Rome.

Kudermetova did need two hours and 33 minutes but came through 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reserve her place in the last four.

Serving up 11 aces in the match, Kudermetova also overcame three breaks of serves against her – one in each of the three sets. She was down a set after dropping her serve in eighth game, but from that point on, the Russian slowly clawed back into the encounter.

The pair traded breaks towards the end of the second set before Kudermetova grabbed the initiative with a decisive break in the eight game and then raced away to a 3-0 lead in the third set with two breaks of serves.

This follows Kudermetova’s wins over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, Anastasia Potapova and Marie Bouzkova in the previous three rounds.

She will hold the aces in this one too.

Kalinina Scrapes Past Haddad Maia

In what was the longest best-of-three sets match of the season, Kalinina scraped through to her maiden WTA 1000 semifinal by edging out Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Kalinina came back from being 3-0 down in the decider to usurp her Brazilian opponent in a match that lasted three hours and 41 minutes. She won 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-3 and would later go on to admit it was the longest match of her career.

She added: “It feels great, but I can’t feel my body or my legs.”

And that could be the crux of the issue here – how quickly can she recover from this and get back to her best.

Kalinina does have a day’s rest which should make things easier but there is still a chance that she might not get too much time to prepare if she is still feeling sore on Wednesday from that late-night effort.

Can Kalinina, who had been dispatched in the first round at both, the Charleston Open and Madrid Open, find her way through to her second career WTA final?

Kudermetova v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova has been consistent and she deserves her place in the last four. She will also hold the edge on account of the amount of having spent so much lesser time on court than Kalinina but we could still see a keen tussle here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kudermetova to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
