Daniil Medvedev v Holger Rune Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came in Monte-Carlo earlier this season. Rune had won that quarterfinal in straight sets.

Medvedev Shocks Tsitsipas

In a match that saw its fair share of rain stoppages, Medvedev overcame the elements, odds and his gritty opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas to make it to the final of the Rome Masters.

Medvedev overcame Tsitsipas 7-5, 7-5 to march into the title-decided in a match that had a playing time of an hour and 47 minutes.

What was interesting about the match was there were a total of six break-points in it and none of them were saved. Medvedev was broken twice while he overcame Tsitsipas’ serve on four occasions including in the 11th games of both the sets.

The Russian, who had overcome Alexander Zverev in the fourth round and then routed Yannick Hanfmann in the quarterfinal, broke Tsitsipas very early in their semifinal. Tsitsipas retaliated with a break in the eighth but in a crucial 11th game he frittered away a chance to go 6-5 up.

The script repeated itself in the second set when Medvedev took an early 2-0 lead, dropped his serve in the sixth game but then broke Tsitsipas to 15 in the 11th. He served it out to 15 in the very next game to make it to his ninth ATP 1000 final and just his second on this surface.

Can he now tame Rune and become the world number two?

Rune Pushed by Ruud

It was expected to be a one-sided encounter given the contrast in the fortunes of the two players facing off in the semifinal, Rune and Casper Ruud.

Rune had entered the match on the back of a 12-2 win-loss record on clay and 26-9 overall for the season. His opponent, the Norwegian number one was 10-10 on win-loss at the start of the tournament and had surprised a few by making the semifinal at the expense of Francisco Cerundolo in the previous round.

But when Rune dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, it looked like it could turn out to be anyone’s match.

Even more so when Ruud when 4-2 ahead in the second with one break of serve. Rune, who had shocked Novak Djokovic in the previous round, went on to win five games in a row from that point on and then broke Ruud twice more times in the final set to clinch a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 win.

He will now contest in his third clay final of the season, having lost to Andrey Rublev in Monte-Carlo and won the Munich Open after that. Can he stop Medvedev’s stunning clay court fairy tale this season?
