After having made a sterling start to the season which saw Blinkova make the semifinal of the Hobart International as a qualifier, she has fallen away with her on-court form.
The Russian, having played 18 matches matches since then, spread across both circuits and even qualifiers has won just seven of them.
This includes two opening round wins recently – at the Reus Open and the Italian Open – but she was roundly beaten both times after those victories.
She now enters a tournament in which Blinkova has played twice before this, in 2020 and 2021 and won just one match. Can she turn things around here by first doubling her win count and then making it two in two for the first time since Hobart in January?

Once knocking at the doors of the top 150 rankings in the world, Hesse’s ranking has plumetted to outside the top 700 thanks to her lack of on-court time.
Last year, for instance, Hesse did not play any competitive tennis after January and lost all the points she had garnered over the 12 months preceding her absence. What that meant was Hesse had to return to the ITF circuit this season ranked outside the top 1200.
She has turned some things around this season thanks to a quarterfinal appearance at the Macon ITF competition and a second round entry in the WTA Paris but there’s still a lot to be done if Hesse wants to return to her career-best.
It could start with a strong showing here in Strasbourg on a surface where she has played a lot of her tennis.
