Cirstea Enjoys Resurgent Season

Sorana Cirstea has stepped out of the wilderness and played some of her best tennis this year and finds herself on the cusp of breaking the top 30.

The Romanian, now 33, had a slow start to the year, winning just one main draw match in five tournaments. Cirstea’s top 100 status was in severe doubt even by virtue of picking up her second win of the season in Dubai.

Cirstea came full circle on the North American hard courts where she entered the Sunshine Swing ranked 83rd in the world rankings, but pulled off supreme performances.

First on the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Cirstea shocked top-5 player Caroline Garcia en route to the final eight where she bowed out at the hands of Iga Swiatek.

But she went a round better in Miami, where she notched the finest win of her career by beating World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka to make the semis. There, she would lose to eventual champion Petra Kvitova despite leading in the opening set.

That form hasn’t been a one-off, with Cirstea replicating it on clay where she bagged the WTA 125K title in Reus and jumped to 34th in the rankings.

Burel Chasing Rare Main Draw Win

Clara Burel was once touted as the next big thing in French tennis. But the former junior No. 1 looks a shadow of the player that took the tennis world by storm on the lower tiers.

Burel was ranked inside the top 100 at this time last year, but she had a tough year in 2022 bar her US Open third-round showing (upset Elena Rybakina).

If Burel was looking to start the new season afresh, things have turned from bad to worse, with the 22-year-old winning just two main draw matches at WTA level.

The wins have dried up at the ITF scene too and her low ranking means she warrants a place at most top-tier tournaments at Tour level.

She didn’t get a wild card in Strasbourg, but by virtue of too many players withdrawing prior to the event, Burel will get a chance to showcase a glimpse of her talent on Monday.

Cirstea v Burel Prediction and Tip

Clara Burel is too talented not to live up to her teenage hype, but it’s high time she starts to make some career-changing decisions. Cirstea has enjoyed a major renaissance and admits she’s never been away. The Romanian can blow hot and cold occasionally, but she’ll likely navigate her way past a fully-charged home favorite.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cirstea to win: 1/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/5
