Ilya Ivashka v Guido Pella Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came indoors in St. Petersburg in 2018. Pella had needed three sets but gotten past his opponent.

Ivashka on a Five-Match Losing Streak

The last time Ivashka won a match at any level was at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He had managed to qualify for the event with successive victories against Hugo Gaston and Taro Daniel and then overcome the out of sorts Dan Evans in the first round.

Since then, it has been one defeat after another and the Belarusian player has lost five in a row.

So wretched has been Ivashka’s form on clay that he has had to shift to the Challenger circuit once he went down in the Rome Masters and even there, he lost in the first round.

To be fair to Ivashka, that defeat came against a clay-court specialist in the form of Tomas Etcheverry and was on expected lines.

He returns to an event where he made the quarterfinal last season but this time around he does that with a hope of stalling his losing streak. And first up he finds himself an opponent who loves his time on clay too but has barely played any tennis since 2019.

Pella Trying to Claw Back to His Best

Once ranked 20th in the world, Pella’s lack of tennis appearances over the last four years has been detrimental to his ranking which now reads an abysmal 421st in the world.

What would be a bit of a relief for the Argentine is he was outside the top 1000 at the start of the season and four main draw wins over the six tournaments he’s featured in have allowed him the ‘luxury’ of his latest ranking.

Clay has always been Pella’s go-to, which can also be seen from the fact that two of those aforementioned wins have come in such tournaments. The most recent one came in Rome where he stunned Maxime Cressy in the first round before putting up a fight in one of the sets against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The signs of a resurrection are very much there for Pella. What he will be aiming at is a bit of a match consistency that could help him stitch together a couple of successive wins.

Can that begin in this tournament where he’s up against an out-of-form Ivashka?

Ivashka v Pella Prediction and Tip

Love the odds on this one with Pella at 6/5 for a win. Backing him to edge out the struggling Ivashka, probably win in three here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Games Handicap Pella +2.5: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Pella to win: 6/5
