Monfils Some Way Away From Full Match Fitness

At his best, Monfils was ranked sixth in the world before an injury issue caused him to miss a huge chunk of the previous season and a part of this year as well.

The Frenchman returned to the circuit this season in March at the Indian Wells Masters but in the six tournaments he’s played in this period, he has won just one match. That came at the Ostrava Challenger in April.

In fact, three of the six competitions Monfils has played have been Challengers and he has gotten knocked out in the first round at two of them. That includes a first round at the Aix en Provence Challenger earlier this month.

Now Monfils returns to site of a tournament where he had made a final way back in 2005. It was only the third time he had entered an ATP final and while he had gone on to lose that match to Andy Roddick, it would best be remembered for one of the last tournaments which was played in carpet.

Can he turn things around on clay this time around?

Cachin Happy to Play His Trade on Clay

He is ranked 63rd in the world and as a result of that, he has had to alternate between featuring on the ATP Tour and playing a few Challengers to get through. This has been down to his desire to feature on clay instead of carry on losing on hardcourts.

This isn’t quite an opinion but a take on his stats on the two surfaces, clay and hardcourt.

Cachin has featured in five hardcourt competitions and won just one round. On clay, on the other hand, Cachin has an overall 14-11 record this season while even if one opts not to include Challengers, Cachin is 6-8.

This includes a four round appearance at the Madrid Masters where he defeated Francisco Cerundolo and Frances Tiafoe en route the round of 16.

He will be an obvious favourite here but will need to be wary of his opponent who is no pushover despite his fitness concerns.

Monfils v Cachin Prediction and Tip

The hope is that Monfils will resume winning at some stage but the good money would be on Monfils doing that on a surface outside of clay. Backing Cachin for a win here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cachin to win: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
