Maria Form Dips Since Bogota

Maria looked to have made a solid transition to clay this season when she went on to win the Bogota Open in early April. Since then, however, her struggles have come back and wins have been few and far between.

The 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist made the second round at both, the Stuttgart Open and the Madrid Open before losing to Caroline Garcia and Bernarda Pera respectively. And then at Rome, Maria was a straight-set loser in the very first round as she went down to Anna Bondar as well.

What’s interesting to note is that Maria had had a similar showing on clay last season too.

She had won the Bogota title but then struggled to replicate that success elsewhere on clay. In fact in the three tournaments she featured in on the same surface, Maria had been knocked out in the first round and it was only in Bari on the WTA 125 tour that she managed to make the quarterfinal.

Can she help herself to a deep run here?

Prozorova Hovering Around Her Career Best

The good news for Prozorova is she will be making her WTA debut in this tournament having made the main draw with successive wins in the qualifiers. In the second of those qualifying rounds, Prozorova defeated Francesca Di Lorenzo despite starting out a 1/1 underdog in the encounter.

This isn’t to say that Prozorova hasn’t shown a lot of promise at the lower level of tennis.

Having begun her career in 2021, Prozorova was ranked outside the top 1200 in 2022 but ended the season on 336th in the world thanks to two ITF title wins. And this season, while she hasn’t added to her title count, Prozorova has improved to 287th with a 5-4 record on clay.

Add those two title wins on clay as well and we are looking at Prozorova having a good shot coming into this opening encounter.

Maria v Prozorova Prediction and Tip

Not surprisingly Maria is a heavy favourite but does that mean that Prozorova won’t have a chance? No, we don’t think so. This could go either ways with Prozorova’s solid record – albeit at the lower level – and the unknown quantity that she is making things tougher for Maria.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Prozorova +4.5: 1/1
