As recently as last month, Baez was ranked 30th in his world. That was also his career-best ranking with the Argentine having reached there on the back of a title win in Cordoba and successive match wins in both, Rio and Santiago.
He would open his European clay swing following the Sunshine Masters series with another quarterfinal appearance at the Estoril Open and it looked like he was on his way to making it into the top 20 with the clay court season still very young.
Unfortunately for him, things haven’t quite gone his way since then. A first round loss at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Munich Open, have been followed by a 2-2 win-loss record at the Madrid and Rome Masters as well.
What that has resulted in is a fall to 44th on the ATP charts and that top-20 seems a fair distance away for Baez.
What that has also meant is that the Argentine has been forced to feature in the week in the lead-up to the French Open to try and fine-tune his preparations in the lead-up to what is his most-awaited Grand Slam competition.

Fucsovics 3-4 on Clay This Season
Unlike his opponent in this one, clay isn’t Fucsovics’ most preferred stretch. His overall record on clay isn’t too different from that in hardcourt competitions winning about 51-52% of the matches on either but Fucsovics hasn’t played as much on clay as he has in hardcourt tournaments too.
And that can be seen from his performances on clay this season.
Fucsovics has participated in four clay court tournaments in 2023, winning three of the seven main draw matches he’s played in. Two of those losses have come in the very first round – at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Masters.
It’s only in Rome that he managed to make the third round with victories against Filip Krajinovic and Alex de Minaur and that’s the only hope he will take into this encounter.
That being said, his opponent is a heavy clay-courter who could hold a much bigger sway despite his recent form.
