Bernarda Pera v Kimberly Birrell Head to Head

38th-ranked Bernarda Pera and 111th-ranked Kimberly Birrell have not played each other before this.

Pera Stutters In Beating Chang

Bernarda Pera was 1/10 to win her opener against compatriot and lucky loser Sophie Chang and things appeared to be moving in the right direction while leading 6-4 2-0.

But Chang who battled valiantly in the opening set played with nothing to lose, and taking the game to Pera, managed to break the lefty twice in the next eight games to snatch the second set against the odds.

It only served as a minor blip as normal service resumed in the decider, with Pera reeling of six of seven games contested to charge past Chang. It’s Pera’s fourth win of this year’s clay swing although that figure is a long way short from her career-best 21 match wins in 2022.

Last year, Pera lost to Karolina Pliskova in the round of 16 in Strasbourg but she’ll face a lower-ranked opponent for the second match in a row. Can she reach her second quarterfinal of the season?

Birrell Too Good for Malygina

Kimberly Birrelly was a class above qualifier Elena Malygine, winning their first-round meeting in straight sets.

Birrell who is three years Malygina’s senior, was the dominant player in the afternoon as she ended her three-match losing streak in Strasbourg.

The two players opened the match by exchanging service breaks in the first three games. But it was the Aussie who made her next move to break the Estonian twice in quick succession to bag the opening set in 41 minutes.

Birrell’s first serve was extremely erratic. In the first set, she won 62% first serve points but that number went down drastically in the second set, where she won a lowly 46% first-serve points and was broken twice.

The only consolation was that Malygina fared way worse on serve tallying 39% of first-serve points won.

Pera v Birrell Prediction and Tip

Although Pera stuttered en route to victory, Birrell’s serving frailties will be exposed here. And I can’t see the American throwing another stinker for the second match in a row against a lower-ranked opponent.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pera to win: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Pera to win in straight sets: 5/6
