This will be their first tour level meeting but they have met twice at lower level tournaments and Barrere has won both of those matches, which were played on clay.

Wold no. 17 Tommy Paul has been in fine form this year but he is 0-3 on clay at the tour level.
Paul had first round byes in Houston, Madrid and Rome but lost his first match in each of those tournaments. One silver lining? He was a finalist at the Aix en Provence challenger in the first week of May, going down to Andy Murray. Therefore overall, he has a 3-4 season record on clay, across levels.
He had a fantastic run in the first quarter, reaching a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open.
Paul also reached his second ATP final this year, but couldn’t add to the Stockholm title he won in 2021, going down in the final of the Acapulco Open.

Barrere Knocks Out Moutet
After losing in the first round in all his past three appearances in Lyon, Gregoire Barrere finally won his first match in the tournament when he knocked out Corentin Moutet on Monday.
The world no. 55 Barrere got a break in the final game of the first set and then raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Moutet got one break back but it was Barrere who got a third break in the set to close out the match 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 31 minutes.
The win improved the Frenchman to 4-4 on clay this year and he is 5-5 across levels.
Barrere’s best performance at the tour level this year was a quarterfinal finish in Montpellier. However, at the Challenger level, the 29-year-old picked his sixth title in Quimper.

Paul looked good in Aix en Provence challenger and has been in excellent form throughout the season. On the other hand, Barrere is off to a good start and will give the American a run for his money. So expect this to be a close contest with Paul edging through.
