Dimitrov Hoping to Do Better Than He Has All Season Clay

While clay isn’t exactly Dimitrov’s most preferred surface, he has done well enough to win the opening round at each of the four tournaments he has played on dirt.

Unfortunately for the Bulgarian number one, he hasn’t gone beyond that.

Dimitrov overcame Ben Shelton in Monte-Carlo, defeated Emilio Gomez in Barcelona, sent Gregoire Barrere out in Madrid and then ousted Stan Wawrinka at the Rome Masters in the first match he played there.

Defeats to Jiri Lehecka, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic followed in the next round with one other match seeing Dimitrov withdraw from it because of illness.

A quarterfinalist here the last time he played in Geneva, Dimitrov will hope he can emulate that showing this time too.

Carballes Baena Stretched to Three by Rincon

Daniel Rincon is 20 years old and ranked 274th in the world but is a fast-improving tennis player. And despite Carballes Baena’s decent form on clay coming into this tournament, Rincon managed to pull off a set before the world number 58 came through for a victory.

Carballes Baena needed nearly two and a half hours to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 and seal his maiden career win in Geneva.

A title-winner at the Marrakesh Open earlier this season, Carballes Baena was coming into this tournament on the back of a third round appearance at the Rome Masters but that didn’t seem to matter to Rincon who kept in touch with his opponent for most part of the encounter.

Even in the first set that Carballes Baena won, the two traded four breaks of serves before he got the better of Rincon in the 10th game. In the second set, the two went neck in neck till the ninth when Rincon broke to level the match.

It was only in the decider that Carballes Baena’s experience shone through as he eased through his opponent’s serve on three occasions to grab the win.

Dimitrov v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Dimitrov is 2/5 to win this but Carballes Baena won’t be a pushover and we can expect to see a third set here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
