Taylor Fritz v Marcos Giron Head to Head

This rivalry has seen six previous iterations including three on the Challenger circuit and Fritz has won five of those. All these matches, however, have come on hardcourt surfaces.

Fritz 7-4 on Clay This Season

He is a top-10 player and one would have expected Fritz to have taken a break from featuring in a tournament in the week preceding the French Open. Strangely he’s opted to take part in this competition for the first time in his career and after a first round bye faces an opponent whom he has played six times before this.

And it’s not even as if Fritz has been woefully out of touch on clay that he needs an extra week of preparation before the season’s second Grand Slam.

Barring an early exit at the Rome Masters where he fell to Yannick Hanfmann, Fritz had reached the semifinal at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Munich Open. He would go on to enter the fourth round in Madrid as well before Zhizhen Zhang caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Fritz isn’t the best clay-courter around on the circuit but this clearly has been one of his better seasons on this surface. A couple of wins here could help him gain a lot more confidence now that he’s opted to play here.

Giron Routs Bublik

Given Giron’s performances on clay, he was never going to go into his opening round match against Alexander Bublik as a favourite but all of that didn’t matter too much to him on the day.

The American romped to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Bublik in a match that didn’t last even an hour and saw Giron not face a single break-point either. In turn, Giron broke Bublik four times, including a decisive one late in the second set.

Bublik showed some fight in that set, saving one break-point and pulling through to a 4-4 scoreline but Giron pulled away with a break of serve in the ninth game.

Giron had earlier made the second round of the Houston Open and entered the quarterfinal in Munich, but followed it up with two defeats from three matches at the Madrid and Rome Masters. He will hope he can put up a fight against Fritz here.

Fritz v Giron Prediction and Tip

Fritz is a 1/3 favourite and while we are inclined to do that, matches in the week before a major tournament need to be looked at carefully. Top players have one eye towards the Grand Slam to follow and the performances are more inclined towards trying out something new or fine-tuning something that’s not working for them rather than only the result.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fritz to win: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
