Ymer hasn’t featured in any top-level clay-court competitions and was playing in only his second tournament since the Miami Masters here. And while he had made the quarterfinal of the Bordeaux Challenger recently, there would have been a few nerves as he returned to the ATP circuit after exactly two months.
Fortunately for the Swede, there was no such issues as he clinched his place in the second round with a straight-set win over Richard Gasquet.
In a match lasting an hour and 53 minutes, Ymer won 6-3, 7-5 to register his first main draw victory since late February this year.
Five breaks of serves in the first six games set the ball rolling before Ymer clinched the first set. In the second, Ymer grabbed an early 3-1 lead, only to drop his serve at 5-4. Ymer broke right back and did not waste the second chance he had to serve for the match.
He faces another Frenchman in the second round.

Fils Tames Zhang
Zhizhen Zhang is ranked more than 40 places ahead of Fils but was no match for his 18-year-old opponent in their first round match.
Fils came through 6-3, 6-2 in their opener which lasted a mere 74 minutes to set up a second round meeting with Ymer.
With both players slamming six aces, Fils was aided by Zhang’s seven double-faults that meant he struggled with his serving otherwise. While Fils won 82% of his first serve points, Zhang had only 56% points won and was broken five times in the match.
This follows back to back semifinal appearances for Fils in Montpellier and Marseille and a second round showing in Rome earlier this month. Can he overcome Ymer here?
