Putintseva Eases Past Local Wildcard

Local player Aya El Aouni is in very early stages of her tennis career and as a result, has never been ranked higher than 1127th in the world. And her lack of experience playing against a player like Putintseva showed, as did her fighting spirit which was on display for a bit in the second set.

Putintseva still needed nearly an hour and a half before warding off the El Aouni challenge in her opening round, winning 6-1, 6-4.

After a straightforward first set which saw Putintseva get the better of El Aouni’s serve three times, she broke early again to take a 3-0 lead in the second. But just when it all looked to be going her way, Putintseva was broken and the Moroccan player levelled things out at 4-4.

That was about as much steam as she could generate though as Putintseva earned a break-point when El Aouni served to stay in the match, which she duly converted to clinch it.

Putintseva will now be aiming for successive wins for the first time since Hobart in January.

Jeanjean Wins First Main Draw Match of the Season

The 376th-ranked Gabriela Lee wasn’t expected to give Jeanjean much of a fight according to the bookmakers’ odds but she almost snatched the match from under her opponent’s nose.

Jeanjean needed a whopping three hours of on-court time to get past Lee, winning 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 to squeak through to the second round.

A whopping 16 breaks of serves punctuated the encounter accounting for nearly half the number of games in the match – it speaks volumes about how it seemed more a case of who erred lesser in the match.

It was only in the third set that the two players got some control of their serves after both had broken one another in the first two games. At 4-3 though, Jeanjean made a match-deciding break of serve before serving it out to love.

Can she put up a show against Putintseva?
