Louis Chirico has had to feature in a lot of ITF circuit matches to bolster her ranking and she came into this tournament on the back of some underwhelming form. Which meant that despite Svitolina’s recent struggles to get back to her best, she did not have a lot of difficulties in getting past her American opponent here.
The match lasted nearly two hours but Svitolina found a way to earn her second round spot in straight sets. She won 6-4, 7-6 (1) to register her first main draw win at the highest level.
Svitolina, who had reached the semifinal of the WTA Saint-Malo in early May, did not have the greatest serving day though as she got broken five times in the encounter. In turn, she got the better of Chirico’s serve six times though which made all the difference.
The good news for Svitolina is she has shown signs of improvement and while she is some way away from her best, it’s results like these that will aid her in getting the ball rolling. Can she now make it two in two?

Here’s the difference between Routliffe’s career record in singles and doubles tennis. In the former she hasn’t played more than 20 matches in a calendar year since 2018. Her doubles play has seen her win three WTA titles in as many years since 2021, and 15 lower-level tournament wins too.
Which is why it was no surprise that Routliffe went into her opening round match against Su-wei Hsieh as a whopping 29/4 underdog to shock her opponent. And shock is what she did as Routliffe registered a 7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-1 win over her Taipei opponent.
This was only her second singles match in main draws of competition this year too with Routliffe having lost in the first round of the Auckland Open and the qualifiers of the WTA Florence.
She was knocked out of the qualifiers here as well but made it through as a lucky loser before surprising Hsieh. Can she now take some of that momentum against the higher quality play of Svitolina?
