Ruud Hoping to Start Well after 2022 Final

While Ruud hasn’t had the best of seasons, the good news is that the pressure would be off the Norwegian number one coming into this tournament.

He has struggled to get going for most of the season and even though he did win a title in Estoril in early April, Ruud’s performances in the rest of the clay court swing has been anything but exemplary.

Sure, Ruud did make the semifinal of the Rome Masters but we are talking of a player who was a two-time Grand Slam finalist in 2022 itself, making it to the title-deciding rounds at the French Open and US Open.

This season, he hasn’t done half as well in hardcourt competitions but more vitally opted out of the South American clay swing and then crashed out early at Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

He runs the risk of taking a tumble down the rankings chart if he is unable to go deep into the second week of this competition.

Ymer Surprises Hanfmann in Qualifiers

With the kind of form that Yannick Hanfmann is in, it was surprising to see him having to go through the qualifiers to enter the main draw here. Imagine a world number 64 to do that but on the date of the cut-off for the direct qualifiers, Hanfmann wasn’t in the top 100.

What that meant was that when he took to court for his third qualifying round match against Elias Ymer, he was a whopping 1/5 favourite to win it.

Ymer had other ideas though. In just over an hour and a half, he broke Hanfmann five times in the encounter to win it 6-3, 6-4 to advance to only his third main draw appearance at the French Open.

This, in fact, has been one of his best showing for the season with his only main draw win in an ATP tournament coming at Marrakesh.

Overcoming Ruud, despite the Norwegian’s form issues would be a Herculean task though.

Ruud v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Ruud can be expected to grab this easily, winning in three.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruud to win in straight sets: 8/13
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 30.5 games in the match: 4/5
