Alcaraz Kick-Starts as a Tournament Favourite

It’s not often that you have a 19-year-old come into a Grand Slam as a favourite to lift the title, especially in an era which had Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic ruling the roost for years.

With Federer retired, Nadal opting out and Djokovic slightly under-par, it gives the top seeded Alcaraz a chance to go the distance and double his Grand Slam title count.

And it’s not just about the situation of the aforementioned three players alone. Alcaraz has had the form on his side as he comes into this tournament on the back of title wins at the Barcelona Open and Madrid Masters this season. Not to mention another one in Buenos Aires and a finals appearance in Rio.

That’s on clay alone. Alcaraz had earlier lifted the title in Indian Wells too, making it three Masters tournament victories in less than four months of tennis this season. He will be eager to show he is ready to go with a straightforward opening showing.

Cobolli Makes it Through the Qualifiers

Cobolli’s career-best ranking is 133rd in the world and this will be his first ever appearance in a Grand Slam tournament.

The Italian 21-year-old had made his ATP main draw debut two years back and comes into this year’s French Open on the back of a mere four wins from 11 matches at the highest level.

Two of those victories came in Munich earlier this year where he reached the quarterfinals at the expense of Jordan Thompson and Oscar Otte. Since then he has made a quarterfinal and a semifinal on the Challenger circuit but lost his opener at the Rome Masters.

Here in Roland-Garros, Cobolli added another feather to his cap by defeating Mathys Erhard, Lukas Klein and Laurent Lokoli in the qualifiers to enter the main draw. That, unfortunately, seems to be where his journey ends for this week as he takes on the top seed in his opener.
