Rafael Nadal v Karen Khachanov Head-to-Head
The pair have met five times before, and Ndal has won each time, on all types of surfaces – clay, grass, and hard courts. Three of those meetings came last year – in the US Open and the Masters Events in Monte Carlo and Canada. The only time that Khachanov put up a modicum of resistance was at Flushing Meadows when he won the first set. Otherwise, all their other matches have resulted in comfortable straight set wins for the Spaniard.
Nadal, on Track for 4th Indian Wells Title
Nadal must be supremely confident now that he can lift his fourth Indian Wells title this week, and his first since 2013. With Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev now knocked out, the only person potentially standing in his way is his familiar foe, Roger Federer, who will potentially meet in the semi-finals.
He has enjoyed a comfortable ride to this point in the tournament, thrashing Jared Donaldon of the USA in the second round, cruising past Diego Schwartman of Argentina in the third, before dispatching Filip Krajinovic of Serbia in the fourth.
Whilst he will not under-estimate Khachanov, he will know that he has a perfect record against him to date, and that will be firm favourite to progress to the semis on Saturday.
Khachanov Needs to Believe
For his part Khachanov needs to believe that he can reverse the trend and beat Nadal for the first time. His advancement thus far this week should give him heart.
Coming in to the tournament looking for the sort of form that helped him win 3 major ATP titles last year, he initially struggled to get past Feliciano Lopez in his second round match, the Spaniard taking him to three sets.
However, compatriot Andrey Rublev offered less resistance in his next match, whilst his most impressive performance came on Wednesday when he defeated big-serving American and number eight seed, John Isner, in straight sets.
He needs to perform at that level again if he is to have any chance against Nadal
Nadal v Khachnov Predictions & Tips
Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win with the bookmakers at 3/14, whilst Khachanov is priced at 54/13. Whilst Khachanov has had a good tournament to date, he is now playing a man who has outclassed him virtually every time they have met previously. It is hard to imagine a narrative where the same result will not occur this time.
