Pera has had a good time on clay in her career but it’s not been her best season so far. In fact since reaching the third round at the Charleston Open – which was her first tournament on clay for the year – Pera had won just one of the following four matches on this surface in the lead-up to the Strasbourg Open.
And even in the first round here against Sophie Chang, Pera was made to stretch to a third set.
Which is why a second successive win for starters – which came in the second round here – would do Pera’s confidence no harm. Secondly, the manner in which Pera overcame Kimberly Birrell would also add to her morale.
In a match that lasted an hour and 40 minutes, Pera was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Birrell despite losing her serve twice in each of the sets.
Birrell did take a 3-1 lead in the second set but Pera broke in successive games to pocket the win. She will now face a surprise quarterfinalist in the form of Burel.

For the second time in the tournament, Burel had gone into the encounter as a second-favourite and for the second time she registered a gruelling win but in two sets.
Having been a 19/5 underdog against Sorana Cirstea in the first round, Burel was a 7-6 (5), 7-5 winner over her Romanian opponent. In the second, the difference in their quality of play wasn’t that high but Burel still went into her match against Kaia Kanepi as 13/10 odds.
And again, it proved to be a tough encounter with neither player really able to take advantage of the other’s issues but in the end managed to scrape through 7-5, 7-6 (0).
For the third time in this tournament now, the 122nd-ranked Burel will have a mountain to climb as she starts off a 17/10 underdog again. Will her fairy-tale run continue?
