Pegula 6-3 on Clay This Season

Pegula is ranked third in the world but it must be quickly added it’s a bit of a surprise she is yet to win a singles title this season. In fact since 2019, Pegula has won just one WTA tournament and while her performances otherwise have been sterling, this lack of trophies would be a bit of a bother.

As would be her performance on clay this year which has seen the American win just six matches and lose three.

This includes a quarterfinal appearance at the Madrid Open but a second round defeat in Rome where she went down to Taylor Townsend despite starting out a 1/8 favourite in that encounter.

The good news for Pegula is her joint-best performance in a Grand Slam came at the French Open last season when she made the quarterfinal. That would be second of three Grand Slam quarterfinals she would earn in 2022 and the American number one followed it up with another at the Australian Open earlier this season.

Can she now repeat that at this year’s French Open as well?

Collins’ Played Just One Match on Clay in 2023

It’s not been a season to remember for Collins so far with the American having won just nine of the 19 matches she has played this year.

Collins, who was an Australian Open finalist last season, was knocked out of the same tournament in the third round and while she did make it to the semifinal in Austin, she hasn’t done too much of note after that.

The American went out in straight sets at the Indian Wells Open, going down to Dalma Galfi, before losing her third round match in Miami to Pegula.

Switching over to clay at Charleston, Collins lasted just one round as she failed to take advantage of the first set win over Shelby Rogers. Rogers came back strongly to send Collins out.

With that kind of a record under her belt this year, Pegula will hope for a bit of a miracle coming into this one against the world number three.
