Second seed Taylor Fritz overcame a slow start to beat fellow American Marcos Giron in three sets on Wednesday.
Fritz, who had a first-round bye, was broken early in the first set. he pulled the break back later in the set but the world no. 74 immediately restored his lead with a second break and then held on to take the opening set.
The second set too didn’t start off well for Fritz as Giron broke the world no. 9 in the very first game, but Fritz rebounded by breaking his opponent thrice in the second set. In the final there was just one break of serve and that fell to the second seed, who closed out the two-hour contest 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
A semifinalist in Monte-Carlo and Munich, Fritz improved to 8-4 on clay this year.
A winner at Delray Beach this year, Fritz will be looking to reach a sixth semifinal of the season on Thursday.

Ivashka Holds Off Mannarino
Ilya Ivashka is back into the quarterfinals in Geneva for the second straight year.
The Belarusian got his third main draw win on clay this season when he dispatched the eighth seed Adrian Mannarino in the second round on Wednesday.
After the world no. 86 Ivashka took the first set, the both were involved in a gripping second set, with both exchanging three breaks each in the first seven games. The set eventually went to the left-handed Frenchman, who got the decisive fourth break in the set.
In the final set, Ivashka started with a double break, as he took a 3-0 lead. Mannarino pulled a break back, but the Belarusian sealed the contest 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Ivashka had beaten Guido Pella in a tough two-set contest in the first round. The 29-year-old, who had a difficult start, improved his season record to 8-12 on following the win over Mannarino.

Fritz is a terrific player and has displayed solid form on clay this year. The world no. 9 is expected to ease past Ivashka in the quarterfinal.
