Maria Sakkari v Karolina Muchova Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two on the WTA circuit and both have come on clay. Muchova has won them both including their match at this very tournament last season.

Sakkari Hoping for 2021 Encore

For all her achievements, Sakkari has won just one WTA title and none since 2019. She has also not made it to the final of any Grand Slams so far and with clay not being one of her favourite surfaces, it’s no surprise she enters the French Open with a 5-3 win-loss record on it for the season.

There’s one silver lining though.

Sakkari’s best showing in any Grand Slam has come at the French Open where she made the semifinal in 2021. She would follow that up with another semifinal appearance at the US Open that year too.

Since then, however, Sakkari has never gone beyond the fourth round in any Grand Slam and even that she has managed just once.

Which is why coming into this tournament, the pressure will be off Sakkari with not too many really giving her any chance of going deep into the competition.

Muchova 4-2 on Clay This Season

A look at Muchova’s overall clay record seems to suggest she isn’t much of a clay-court player. One of the biggest indicators is the number of matches she has played on clay in recent times but then again she has done reasonably well in the two tournaments she played on this surface this season.

At the Madrid Open, Muchova overcame Anett Kontaveit in the first round before falling to Irina Begu whereas in Rome, she made it all the way to the fourth round before Paula Badosa got the better of her.

What is also interesting to note is the head to head with Sakkari who has Muchova winning both their previous meetings on clay.

Add that to Muchova’s overall form during the season – a 15-5 win-loss record on hardcourt surfaces – and we could be in for a tantalizing contest that could swing either way.

Sakkari v Muchova Prediction and Tip

We are looking at a potential first round upset here but will this be called an upset if Sakkari doesn’t win? Especially because both players enter this match at 10/11 odds to win this.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Muchova to win: 10/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 1/1
