Kvitova Underprepared for French Open

With the kind of performances that Kvitova had exhibited in the first quarter of the 2023 season, it looked like the 33-year-old veteran had gotten herself a second wind to her career.

A four-match winning streak started the year for Kvitova and it looked to have culminated into an excellent showing at the Miami Open where she shocked Elena Rybakina in the final to win the WTA 1000 title.

Unfortunately for Kvitova, she suffered a right foot injury that forced her to pull out of the Stuttgart Open and she followed that up with her only appearance of the season on clay. It came in Madrid where Kvitova lost in the very first round of the Jule Niemeier, going down in straight sets.

Her fitness continued to elude her as Kvitova withdrew from the Italian Open as well because of the same injury and will now enter the French Open woefully underprepared and with a fitness cloud lurking on her.

Cocciaretto at Career-Best Ranking

On the one hand Cocciaretto’s performances on clay for the season have been admirable given her overall record of 7-2 on win-loss. On the other hand, it must be quickly added here that five of those victories have come in a WTA 125 tournament in San Louis Potosi.

She had gone to win that title, the second WTA 125 of her career but she followed that up with a win and loss at both the Madrid Open and Italian Open.

Defeats to Paula Badosa and Anastasia Potapova seem to suggest that while she is doing well in her own right, she is still some way off from challenging some of the top 20 players in the world.

While Cocciaretto has never made it past the first round at this tournament and is playing an opponent who is ranked 10th in the world, she will think she has a chance here. Especially given her own form over the season and Kvitova’s absence from a few of the tournaments here.

Kvitová v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip

Kvitova returns to this tournament and starts off a whopping 4/5 to win her first round match – those are some of the longest odds a top-20 player has got in their opener this tournament. Backing her to edge out Cocciaretto.

  • Low Risk Tip: Kvitova to win: 4/5
