Daria Kasatkina v Jule Niemeier Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Bad Homburg Open in 2022 and Kasatkina had won that in three sets.

Clay Gives Kasatkina Hope

In a season that has not seen Kasatkina play some of her best tennis overall, she has begun to show some of the old sparkle with her performances on clay.

Kasatkina, who had won two titles apiece in 2021 and 2022, came into the clay court swing on the back of a 5-8 win-loss record for the season. It was only in Charleston that she finally managed to stitch some wins together, reaching the semifinal before losing to Ons Jabeur.

While an opening defeat at the Stuttgart Open would have dented Kasatkina’s confidence, she did make the fourth round at both, the Madrid Open and Italian Open. And that is what should give Kasatkina some hope coming into the French Open.

What should also help her cause is the confidence that only last year Kasatkina had was one of the semifinalists at this very tournament. She would love to take that into her opening round encounter.

Niemeier 2-5 on Clay This Season

To say this has been a forgettable year for Niemeier would be bit of an understatement.

From the 14 WTA tournaments that Niemeier has managed to feature in 2023, she has won a sum total of four main draw matches. That’s right, a mere four matches spread across those many!

In the middle of that, there was a point in time this season when Niemeier went on a seven-match losing streak before a surprise couple of wins at the Madrid Open. There she had gone past Xinyu Wang and Petra Kvitova before Elise Mertens put an end to her fairy-tale.

And Niemeier then lost successive matches after that as well.

What’s fascinating to watch is that despite such an appalling set of results for Niemeier, her ranking hasn’t changed too much – she had begun the season ranked 65th and she enters this tournament as the 72nd-ranked player.

Not that it should matter too much because she has been drawn to play a top-10 player who has been doing well on clay and that would mean things are looking bleak for Niemeier here.

Kasatkina v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

It shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Kasatkina who can be backed to win this in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kasatkina to win in straight sets: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 4/5
