Felix Auger-Aliassime v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2019 Rio Open and Auger-Aliassime had won that in straight sets.

Auger-Aliassime Needs to Do a Lot Better on Clay This Season

At the time of writing, Auger-Aliassime has withdrawn from Lyon Open competition just a week before the start of the French Open and that has followed the Canadian’s poor form on clay this season.

In fact, had Auger-Aliassime not played in this competition in Lyon, he would have come into the season’s second Grand Slam without a win on clay in 2023. What would have made things even more difficult is Auger-Aliassime has lost to Dusan Lajovic and Alexei Popyrin in Madrid and Rome respectively.

Auger-Aliassime’s record at the French Open isn’t the best either.

This is the only Grand Slam at which he hasn’t made it to the last eight and his fourth round appearance last season was the first instance of him having won a singles main draw match at the French Open.

Auger-Aliassime will hope to emulate his showing from the previous season at the very least but gauging the way things have gone for him this year, it might not be the easiest of tasks.

Fognini Made Third Round at Rome

A former world number nine, Fognini’s form has fallen away drastically and he is currently teetering on the brink of needing to play qualifiers to make it to the Grand Slam main draw. He might have needed to do that here too had it not been for his previous performances on clay.

Which is why a third round appearance at the Italian Masters two weeks ago would have provided the Italian some relief.

Fognini overcame Andy Murray and Miomir Kecmanovic in the first two rounds there before he went down to Holger Rune in the third.

That result followed a second round appearance at the Estoril Open and another second round showing in Rio – the only other two matches that Fognini had won all season.

That’s also why despite Auger-Aliassime’s fitness concerns and his own form issues on clay, Fognini starts off a whopping 7/3 to win this.

Auger-Aliassime v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime will have to overcome his own troubles here but we will be going with the Canadian here. Might drop a set on his way though.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4
