It was probably Stephens’ biggest comeback of her career as she overcame three match-points against her in the final set to edge past Peyton Stearns.
Stephens rallied from being 6-3 down in the third set tie-breaker to win five points in a row and the match on her way to the semifinal. The match lasted two hours and 49 minutes and saw a whopping 13 breaks of serves in the encounter.
Stearns took the first set in a tie-breaker and then saw Stephens shrug off two break-points in the second before she levelled the encounter. In the third, neither player found holding their serve a straightforward task.
In fact in only four of the 12 games played in the final set was the serve held with both players breaking the other on four occasions. Stephens had a chance to serve for the match two times but failed to do so before winning the tie-breaker from behind.
She had earlier overcome Vera Zvonareva and Timea Babos in her previous two rounds.

Bronzetti Routs Parks
Alycia Parks has had her time under the sun this season but it was not to be in her quarterfinal against Bronzetti, who routed the American in double-quick time to advance to the semifinal.
Bronzetti was on court for an hour and 19 minutes before clinching her win 6-2, 6-0. And it was down to the serving which made all the difference between the two players.
On the one hand Bronzetti got 64% of her first serves in and won 77% of those points. Parks, on the other hand, had corresponding figures of 52% and 59% respectively. As a result of that, Bronzetti managed to break her opponent five times in the match.
This followed a shock win over Rebecca Peterson in the first round and a three-set victory over Tatjana Maria in the second.

Stephens starts off a 1/2 favourite and those are just odds despite the difference between the two players on paper. It’s Stephens’ inconsistency that does make it difficult to back her completely, especially on clay where Bronzetti has done well in the past.
