Elina Svitolina v Clara Burel Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Chicago Open where Svitolina had won in the third set when her opponent retired from the match.

Varvara Gracheva is one of the most improved players in recent times and with Svitolina only just returning to the tour after giving birth to her child, it was obvious who the favourite was.
Svitolina was having none of that though as as she needed just an hour and 23 minutes to breeze through her quarterfinal. She won 6-3, 6-4 in a match that saw Svitolina face just one break-point.
With a first serve win percentage of 81% to go with getting past her opponent’s first serves a whopping 44% of the times, Svitolina did not allow Gracheva too many chances in the encounter. She got the better of her opponent’s serve on four occasions too.
This follows a walkover that Svitolina got from Erin Routliffe in the previous round and a straight-set win over Louis Chirico in her opener.

Burel Overcomes the Odds against Pera
Bernarda Pera also went into her quarterfinal as a 1/2 favourite but Burel put an end to her run as she defeated the American in a hard-fought three-setter.
Burel did need over two hours to get there but she registered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over the 38th-ranked Pera and make it to her first semifinal of the season.
Having started the season ranked 122nd in the world, Burel has tried unsuccessfully to break into the top 100 multiple times, only to fluctuate between 104th and 131st on the rankings chart. In fact she entered this tournament ranked exactly where she was at the start of the season.
The good news is that irrespective of this result, Burel would have broken into the top 100 for the first time this year. A couple of wins here, including one against Svitolina in this semifinal could take her close to her career-best rank 0f 74th – which should be a huge motivation for Burel.
