Dan Evans v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head

While these two have never faced off at the highest ATP level, they have played twice before – once at the 2015 Davis Cup and the second time at the 2021 Nottingham Challenger. Kokkinakis won the first while Evans scooped up the second.

Evans On a Three-Match Losing Streak on Clay

A semifinalist at the Marrakesh Open, Evans then lost his first match at the Monte-Carlo Masters before regaining some control and rhythm to make it to the semifinal of the Barcelona Open as well.

Till this time, Evans’ campaign on clay had been going rather well, especially given that he had overcome Karen Khachanov and Francisco Cerundolo in Barcelona before going down to Carlo Alcaraz.

Since then, however, Evans has lost two more in a row – to Bernabe Zapata Miralles in Madrid and Roberto Carballes Baena in Rome – leaving him with a few question-marks around his chances at Roland-Garros.

What makes it worse for Evans is his overall record at the French Open is anything but spectacular. Having first played here in 2014, he made the first round for the first time in 2017 but it wasn’t until last season that he won a main draw match here. That remains his own win in this tournament.

Kokkinakis’ Won Just One Match on Clay This Season

Having featured in the Madrid and Rome Masters other than two other Challenger tournaments, Kokkinakis’ only win on clay in the main draw of a top level tournament this season came at the latter. It was thanks to Jaume Munar’s retirement from the match and took him to the second round.

Unfortunately for the Aussie, he has also lost to Munar in Madrid and then went on to go down to Jannik Sinner at Rome.

Kokkinakis’ overall career record leaves a lot to desire too. He has won just five main draw matches from the 16 he has played in his career, giving him a win percentage of a mere 31%.

And if Evans’ record at the French Open was poor, Kokkinakis is no better as he is yet to win a match here.

This, therefore, becomes a battle between two players with no major clay court credentials.

Evans v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

We will go with Evans for his better experience on clay but it could go the distance or could at least see four gruelling sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Evans to win: 8/11
  • High Risk Tip: Four sets in the match: 6/4
