Is the End Near for Isner?
The number of times John Isner has played tennis matches this season is almost countable by hand. Isner has played a meager 11 times this year, winning four matches and losing the other seven.
The ATP’s ace-king has been spending more time with his family and recently skipped the Rome Masters in order to welcome the birth of his fourth child with his wife Madison McKinley.
The scene of Isner’s four ATP wins this season came in one event in Dallas where he became the first man to win 500 tiebreaks in tennis history, but he lost the ultimate battle that week, losing in an incredible final to Yibing Wu.
Isner has since lost at the first hurdle in four more matches including at Houston to Gijs Brouwer in his only clay-court match so far.
Isner has played the French Open no fewer than 13 times and has been to the round of 16 three times at his weakest surface. He also memorably took Rafael Nadal to five sets in Paris – one of only three men to do so – back in 2011.

Borges Seeks Maiden Main Draw Win in Paris
Nuno Borges will be chasing his second win at Grand Slam level when he plays John Isner at the French Open on Sunday.
Borges picked up his maiden main draw win at the 2022 US Open where he came through qualifying and upset Ben Shelton in five sets in the opening round.
He’s played the qualifying round at Roland Garros before but lost his first-round match to Karen Khachanov.
Fortunately for him, this year, he’s avoided a seeded player in the first round. So he’ll look to win a main draw match for the first time at the clay slam.
Borges is 18-11 across all levels this season winning a couple of hard-court titles on the Challenger Tour. But on clay, his record is 2-5. Now that he’s seeing Tour-level tennis on a frequent basis since breaking the top 100, the level of competition has become a tad harder.
Let’s see if he’s capable of extending out-of-form Isner’s woes.
Isner v Borges Prediction and Tip
John Isner is very much at the twilight of his career. And with his ranking about to plummet to three digits, Nuno Borges will hardly get a better chance of breaking his duck at the French Open.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Borges to win: 4/9
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 37.5 games in the match: 1/2
