Azarenka in Clay Court Strife

Even at her best, Azarenka hasn’t quite been able to match her performances on clay with those on the other surfaces. And it’s been no different this season with Azarenka have struggled to make it through deep in any of the three tournaments she has featured in.

A semifinalist at the Australian Open, Azarenka’s form has seriously tapered off since then as she has stumbled to a mere six wins from the following 13 matches. This includes a 2-2 record on clay.

There are two other issues for Azarenka here.

One, those losses on clay have come at the hands of Anna Kalinskaya and Alycia Parks, not two of the best in the business at the moment. The other, possibly bigger problem is Azarenka was also forced to withdraw from the Italian Open, giving Madison Keys a walkover because of a right leg issue.

With all of this happening, it’s actually a surprise she still starts off a 1/2 favourite here.

Andreescu Struggling on Clay Too

As mentioned in the section above, Azarenka has been in some strife on clay but she still starts off a favourite. And the reason for that is her opponent in this opener here, Andreescu has had her own woes.

Again, the former US Open winner has never had a great run on clay in her career. But more vitally, Andreescu also enters this tournament on the back of just two matches played on this surface this season and having lost both.

The second of those defeats came in Rome at the hands of Marketa Vondrousova where Andreescu managed to win just one game.

Which is why even in this battle between two players who don’t enjoy clay too much, she has been touted to be a second favourite by some distance. It seems highly unlikely that Andreescu will be able to to emulate her best ever showing at the French Open – a measely second round appearance on two previous occasions.

Azarenka v Andreescu Prediction and Tip

For all her form problems, Azarenka will start off a favourite here and unless there are some remnants of her fitness problems still, we will pick her as our favourite too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Azarenka to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
