Ostapenko Shrugs off Slow Clay Start in Rome

It took a couple of tournaments for Ostapenko to get going on clay this season as the Latvian player performed the way she would have expected from her own self in Rome.

Ostapenko, who was knocked out after winning her openers in both, the Stuttgart Open and the Madrid Open, made it all the way to the semifinal in Rome recently.

And it wasn’t just the fact she entered the last four stage, it was also a case about overcoming the kind of opponents that she did in Rome.

The world number 17 edged out Sorana Cirstea in her opener before surprising Barbora Krejcikova in the next. Wins over Daria Kasatkina and Paula Badosa followed soon after and it was only Elena Rybakina who ended her run there.

And it’s performances like these that make Ostapenko a very dangerous player on her day.

Martincova’s Won Just One Main Draw Match in 2023

It’s been a forgettable year for Martincova and it continued to remain so on clay.

The former world number 40 hasn’t won a main draw match on clay all season at the highest level but where she could be seeking some comfort from is her performance in Zaragoza, an ITF tournament last month.

Martincova had reached the final there before losing to Viktoriya Tomova.

Other than that, however, Martincova’s won just one round on the WTA circuit in 2023. It was in Miami which had been preceded and followed by opening defeats all season.

And now going up against Ostapenko, things might not be looking very bright for the Czech.

Ostapenko v Martincova Prediction and Tip
