Bautista Agut Barely Managing to Put a Dent on Clay

It’s been a highly forgettable season for Bautista-Agut, who has barely won anything all year. And it didn’t look like that was going to be the case when the Spaniard made it all the way to the final at the Adelaide International and then entered the fourth round at the Australian Open.

Things have turned around drastically for the worse since then.

He lost six of his next seven matches on hardcourt surfaces and it’s not like his results have improved too much on clay either.

Bautista-Agut started off the European clay court season with a defeat in Estoril and over the next three tournaments, won the opener and lost the second match at each.

A 6-2, 6-2 opening defeat at the Italian Open to Marco Cecchinato looks to have been a final straw as he enters the season’s second Grand Slam knowing things might not be looking good even at these early stages of this tournament.

Yibing Makes the French Open for the First Time

About a year ago, Yibing was featuring on the ITF circuit and was ranked outside the top 1000. A startling showing towards the second half of the season helped him end the year ranked 116, a whopping improvement by any stretch.

This year, Yibing has already won a title on indoor hardcourts and despite his obvious grievances on clay, has a 3-5 win-loss record on this surface. This includes a quarterfinal appearance at the Geneva Open where he was forced to retire from that match against Alexander Zverev because of fitness concerns.

If Yibing is fully fit, then he could be entering this match against Bautista-Agut on a similar keel. That’s because he does have the game and those younger legs might be of use coming into a best-of-five encounter.

One must quickly add that last season, Yibing had a 10-2 win-loss record on the Challengers and Futures circuit on clay. That could help.

Tips:
