Paul Is 2-4 at Roland Garros

While Tommy Paul has been a dangerous player on hard courts, he has found little success on clay and an ATP record of 14-22 on the surface is a proof of that.

Paul has won just one tour level match on clay this season and brings a 1-4 record to Roland Garros. He lost his opening matches in Houston, Madrid and Rome, but finally won a first round match against Grégoire Barrère in Lyon. He lost in the second round though to Brandon Nakashima.

Paul had a terrific run though at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger, reaching the final of the tournament, only to finish runner-up to Andy Murray.

Overall, Paul is 17-10 on the tour and 20-11 across levels. He made an impressive start to the season, reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. Only once had he reached the fourth round of a Grand slam prior to his Melbourne heroics and that was at last year’s Wimbledon.

At the French Open, the world no. 17 will be making his fifth appearance. He has a 2-4 record in the tournament. Will he be able to improve that this season?

Stricker Finds a Place as Lucky Loser

World no. 116 Dominic Stricker will make his Grand Slam debut after finding a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser.

Playing in the qualifying rounds, the 20-year-old Swiss won his first round against the Netherlands’ Jelle Sels 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. He then ousted the Czech Republic’s Dalibor Svrcina 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

Stricker however fell to Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante 3-6, 6-1, 1-6 in the final qualifying round, but got lucky following a withdrawal.

Stricker has been in good form recently, albeit at the lower level. He picked up his fifth Challenger title and a second on clay in Prague 2 this month.

It was the lefty’s second title of the season having also won a Challenger in Rovereto, Italy on indoor courts. He has not played a tour level match yet this season. Can he make an impression on his Grand Slam opener?

Paul v Stricker Prediction and Tip

Paul may still be finding his feet on clay, but he knows how to absorb the pressure of big tournaments like a Grand Slam. The American’s experience makes him the favourite in the first round. That said, Stricker can be  a tricky opponent on clay and he will give a tough fight. Expect more than three sets in the contest with Paul edging through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Paul to win: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 32.5 games in the match: 5/6
