Zhang Struggling to Win Matches

It has not been an ideal 2023 so far for world no. 30 Zhang Shuai. The Chinese player head to the season’s second Grand Slam with a 4-10 record and she is 0-2 on clay, having lost her first round matches in Charleston and Strasbourg.

Zhang had a very good run at the Australian Open, reaching the round of 16. But she has done very little since then. Her last win came against Madison Brengle on January 31 in Lyon. Since then, the Chinese player has lost seven matches in a row.

A two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Zhang will be making her 13th main draw appearance at Roland Garros in women’s singles. Her best in the past 12 attempts was a run to the fourth round in 2020.

She was beaten in the first round in the previous two years.

It will be interesting to see if Zhang can strike form in the opener and record her first win on clay in 2023.

Frech Is 9-4 on Clay This Season

Playing Zhang will be world no. 87 Magdalena Frech, who has had a decent run this season according to her standards.

The Polish player will be playing at Roland Garros for the third time. She made it to the second round on her debut in 2018 but lost in the first round last year.

This year, Frech brings a 16-15 season record into the tournament, and that includes matches across levels. More importantly she is 9-4 on clay. She went from qualifiers to the second round in Madrid and Rome and reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 125 in Saint Malo.

So overall, the 25-year-old is in decent touch on clay and that should give her a slight edge against the Chinese player.

Zhang v Frech Prediction and Tip

Zhang has played few matches this year; is on a seven match losing streak, and has not won a match on clay yet this season. Therefore she will be low in confidence going into the opener and Frech could capitalise on that. The Pole has been more consistent than the 29th seed, particularly in recent matches and she could cause an upset in the first round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Frech to win: 2/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 4/5
