Shelton Set for French Open Debut
For a man who hadn’t traveled outside the United States, Ben Shelton’s passport has changed hands more times this season alone and he’s relishing every trip.
Last season, Shelton was one of the Challenger Tour’s stars, winning three titles astonishingly in back-to-back tournaments in the same month.
It was a groundbreaking achievement for the 20-year-old who became the youngest player to sweep three successive titles at that level.
Shelton has since made a seamless transition to Tour-level tennis, switching college education to become a full-time pro and he’s making quite the impression this season.
He came full circle at this year’s Australian Open playing his first Grand Slam on a foreign territory and made the quarterfinals there. It remains his career highlight so far, with his form not picking up since.
Shelton played clay-court tennis on Tour for the first time this season, tallying four wins and seven losses across seven tournaments.

Sonego Eyes Revenge
Lorenzo Sonego didn’t play badly when he faced Ben Shelton in Cincinnati last season. The thrill and adrenaline of playing an ATP event on home soil just pushed Shelton to levels beyond his capabilities at times.
Soengo lost 7-5 in the third in that match, and considering Shelton also upset Casper Ruud in the same tournament, it wasn’t a bad result after all.
The Italian will get a chance to atone for that defeat at the French Open where he is instilled as the heavy pre-match favorite against a man making his debut at Roland Garros.
Sonego has actually performed much better than expected at the clay slam. He made the second week back in 2020 and reached the third round last year, losing to Casper Ruud in five sets despite leading by two sets to one.
Sonego is 12-14 for the season although he comes in with a bit of momentum after his run to the third round of the Rome Masters a week ago.
Shelton v Sonego Prediction and Tip
The American is still learning to play on the surface and although he has the firepower to make this competitive, experience is key for Lorenzo Sonego in this match and he’ll find the gears to beat Shelton.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Soengo to win: 4/11
- High Risk Tip: Sonego to win in four sets: 13/5
