Podoroska a Surprise Semi-Finalist Three Years Ago

Three years ago, Podoroska surprised nearly everybody when she reached the semi-finals in Paris, and, later that same year, she was named WTA Newcomer of the Year.

It would be fair to say that she has struggled to live up to those achievements subsequently, and was beaten in the first round of Roland Garros the following year (she did not compete last year because of injury).

A win, though, on the Challenger tour earlier this year on clay in Colombia, provided a reminder of what the Argentine can do when she is in the mood.

However, on the main tour, she has suffered a dismal run since reaching the second round of the Australian Open, with successive main draw first round defeats in Merida, Bogota, Madrid and Rome.

She also was just beaten in the first round of a Challenger event back in Madrid.

Third Paris Wildcard for Ponchet

Ponchet has been given a wildcard into her home Grand Slam for the third time in her career, although, on the two previous occasions, inn 2018 and 2019, she lost in the first round.

She spends her time almost exclusively on the ITF tour, where she was won nine titles, the most recent of which she picked up in Macon, France in February, although that was on a hard court.

Since then she has made three further ITF semi-finals and twice reached the last eight as well.

However, her one attempt to qualify for a senior WTA event this year, in Lyon, in February, ended with defeat in the first round of qualifying.

Podoroska v Ponchet Prediction and Tip

Whilst there is nothing in Podoroska’s recent from to suggest that she is capable of emulating her performances from three years ago, she has been given a favourable draw against a wildcard who has never won a match in Paris.

The Argentine should prevail.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Podorska to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 6/5
