It’s 1-1 between the two; coincidentally, both those matches took place in Merida in 2014.

Maia on a Good Run

Brazil’s top-ranked player Beatriz Haddad Maia has never made it beyond round two in the Paris Slam, but this year may prove to be an exception.

She has built some momentum ahead of the competition by delivering a quarterfinal run in Rome recently. She lost to Anhelina Kalinina in three sets – two of which went to tie-breaks. Maia had reached the same stage in Stuttgart as well – but that luck did play its part as she benefited from the mid-match retirements of Martina Trevisan and Elena Rybakina.

In addition to similar results in Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Adelaide, the 26-year-old is 16-10 in 2023, ranked #14.

Beatriz has done well in the doubles department, too – notably by reaching the final in Indian Wells Open and winning the crown in the Madrid Masters – the latter being with Victoria Azarenka.

Maria, Looking Sharp

Despite being 35 and among the most senior players in the top 100, Tatjana Maria continues to defy expectations. Her record is at an impressive 22-14 – which also includes two clay titles from ITF Pune and WTA Bogota.

In addition, the veteran German was among the final eight in San Luis Challenger and Hua Hin Open. In bigger events, unfortunately, Maria did not quite manage to carry forward this same rhythm.

In the US Swing in March, she was 1-2, while in the recent European clay swing, she is 3-4. Tatjana’s last event was the Morocco Open where she fell to Lucia Bronzetti in three sets in round two. In Madrid, Stuttgart, and Rome, she was beaten by Bernarda Pera, Caroline Garcia, and Anna Bondar, respectively.

Interestingly, Maria is far more experienced than Maia, but she too has never had a chance to play in round three in the Parisian event in 11 career appearances.

Maia v Maria Prediction and Tip

Beatriz should do well to win this one – but that is only in theory. In reality, she is just as vulnerable as Maria – given her season’s losses to the likes of Sorana Cirstea, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Mirra Andreeva, and Kalinina. Maria has some clay rhythm and can put a resistance.

It may not be an easy match for either player.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip:  Maia to win: 5/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 6/4
