Dominic Thiem v Pedro Cachin Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the Challenger circuit and Cachin had won that match in 2022 on clay.

Thiem Makes Main Draw on His Own Ranking

Given how things have turned out for Thiem, one of his goals recently was to try and enter Grand Slam tournaments without the need to take a wild-card. Or go through the qualifiers.

And his performances on clay in 2023 have helped him achieve that.

There was a quarterfinal appearance at the Estoril Open, another last eight showing in Estoril and second round entries in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. And opting to feature on the Challenger circuit in Mauthausen and Bordeaux, he added a semifinal appearance to his kitty as well.

What all of this has meant is Thiem has improved from his 111th rank in April to his current 91st and made the French Open as a direct entrant.

Can the former world number three now win his first Grand Slam match since the 2021 Australian Open?

Cachin Solid on Clay This Season

Hardcourt tennis isn’t quite what Cachin looks forward to and that can be seen from his record this season. He’s played five hardcourt competitions and won just one match.

On the other hand, Cachin has found his calling on clay and enters the French Open on the back of a 15-12 record on this surface this season across all levels. His best performance came in Madrid where the Argentine overcame Francisco Cerundolo and Frances Tiafoe on his way to the fourth round.

He fell in the first round in Rome before reaching the second round recently in Lyon. His defeat to Sebastian Baez (2/5 to win it) was on expected lines but he did put up a solid fight there.

Which brings him to the French Open where Cachin has won just one match – it came last season as a qualifier. Can he now emulate that showing here too?

Thiem v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Thiem starts off a favourite and given his more recent form we will have to go with the Austrian player for this one. Both players to win a set too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Thiem to win: 8/11
