Burel Coming off a Good Week

Home favourite Clara Burel will start her campaign in the French Open with some wind in her sails. Playing in the Strasbourg Open last week, she made it to the semifinal after dismissing a few experienced players like Sorana Cirstea, Kaia Kanepi, and Bernarda Pera. She ultimately lost to Elina Svitolina in three sets.

This was Burel’s season-best performance, which now puts her at 12-8. In all fairness, the 22-year-old has not played in a lot of tournaments this year, with the French Open set to be her 9th event on the tour.

Before this semifinal showing, Clara’s best result was reaching round two in the Australian Open – as a qualifier.

As for her form in the Paris Slam, she reached round three here in 2020 while lost in the opener in 2021 and 2022.

Tormo Planning a Comeback

Sara Sorribes Tormo, former world number 32, is scripting a resurgence in Paris. She is starting in the draw under protected ranking, as she took a six-month hiatus from the tour last October (now ranked #132).

The 26-year-old Spaniard returned to action only in Bogota, where she reached the quarterfinal. Next, Sara was a semifinalist in ITF Oeiras and, most recently, a runner-up in ITF Madrid.

Tormo has spent the entirety of the year on clay – and also happens to be better experienced.

Over her career, she has won just one WTA title – but she may very well turn it around in the coming years. She also has an impressive 16 ITF finals on clay courts – which should help her start well in the Parisian competition.

Burel v Tormo Prediction and Tip

Burel should be confident, given her recent streak of brilliance in Strasbourg but consistency is always a factor. Tormo may be a bit rusty on her part – but she certainly seems well-equipped to handle her French adversary.

It wouldn’t be too surprising if Tormo walks away with a straight-set win.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Tormo to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
